Topeka vet provides free pet services to homeless people

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -Dr. Allison Crowe donates her time to help the pets of homeless people – to make sure they are healthy and up to date with their injections and exams.

One of his patients, Jared has a special bond with his furry friend who visited Crowe.

“Luna means a lot to me, she has been there throughout my crisis with my wife,” he said.

But a vet visit is a luxury when you are homeless.

This is where Dr Allison Crowe comes in, she works with the Street Dog Coalition, Valeo and The Topeka Rescue Mission to provide free pet services to the homeless.

“If they bring a pet, we’ll help that animal. So we provide vaccines, deworming drugs and heartworm prevention as well as flea and tick control and we also have many documents if they need food, a collar or a leash, from a bowl of water, ”Crowe said.

Crowe says some owners may refuse shelter in order to keep their pets by their side.

“I have learned that pets can be an incredible support for those who are not yet ready to take the next step, they need that emotional support they need to know someone is taking care of them. ‘them, and sometimes it can be a pet and they also provide protection, ”she said.

Crowe started helping when the temperatures were below freezing which caused some concern, but she was left in awe.

“They had set up an amazing and amazing tent with a fireplace nearby and when I walked in I was taking off my coat and hat because it was so hot in there, people who were ‘take care of their pets really care and they are very innovative, ”Crowe said.

Crowe says the best reward is seeing an owner’s face when she tells them their pet is in good hands and no payment is needed.

“We had some amazing heart touching moments and they go there, I would go to show my pet but I have no money and I say ‘It’s okay you can come anyway’ the first reaction is disbelief but then they are so grateful, “.

Fortunately, animals like Luna will be happy and healthy by their side.

“Being homeless, there isn’t much that makes us happy, but it keeps us going all day by being here on the streets,” Jared said.
