OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – We have seen single digit temperatures in Omaha this week. But a big concern at all times with the cold weather is keeping your furry friends warm.
A solution may seem obvious but is still very important.
“One of the best things you can do with pets in cold weather is to bring them inside. If you can’t fit them into your home, even a garage where the wind isn’t as strong, ”said Pam Wiese of the Nebraska Humane Society.
If you have a dog and it has a kennel to protect itself from the cold, the Nebraska Humanitarian Society recommend that the doghouse have enough space for the dog to curl up, have a dog door to keep the wind from blowing, and good insulation like straw or other things to trap heat inside.
And even if it’s cold outside, it’s important that they stay hydrated.
“Water is important because you have to have water to process food and you have to process food to be able to burn calories, so water is as important in winter as it is in summer.”
Some dogs are made for the cold like huskies. But short-haired dogs like boxers and pit bulls are not made for the cold. Short haired dogs are therefore strongly recommended to simply go indoors.
“Any of those guys with a light, really shiny coat.” These guys can’t withstand this cold like the triple-layered ones can.
It is also very important to keep cats indoors. Even if they are normally indoor cats.
But if they are outside, many tend to stay under cars to warm up. So be sure to check around your car.
“You’re going to want to bang on it a bit, get out, just tape on the hood of the car, tap on the walls of the car.” If you get in the car, maybe honk a few times, give it a few seconds… start over.
