Pets are an integral part of many families and taking them on trips has exploded in popularity. Dining out and exploring a city is so much more enjoyable when you can bring along man’s best friend. As the owner and best friend of four pets, there’s nothing better than spending the afternoon on a pet-friendly patio or exploring the trails of a new city with my dogs.
Many cities have embraced this mentality and are doing everything they can to make sure pets are welcome. From dog parks and beaches to Fido-friendly restaurants and stores, these are the best pet-friendly cities in America.
1. Albuquerque, New Mexico (Winner)
Albuquerque, New Mexico tops the 2022 list of the most pet-friendly cities in the United States. Old Town Albuquerque is full of culture-rich museums, shops, restaurants, and plenty of outdoor spaces. Many of these stores allow your dog to cruise with you. The outdoors City tour by ABQ tram also accepts pets.
If you prefer to explore the desert surroundings of the city, the maps at the National Petroglyph Monument The Visitor Center identifies pet-friendly trails, but be sure to bring the leash! Learn about all the pet-friendly options, including many hotels, this city has to offer here.
Pets and owners team up to keep Austin weird. This runner-up city offers so many off-leash areas and pet-friendly businesses that it’s almost weird to go somewhere in Austin and not see any dogs! Start your day with doggy & me yoga at Austin Doga or by hiking to one of the nearby waterholes like Barkin’ Springs. When you’re ready to eat, head to one of Rainey Street’s cute bars. Many have large outdoor spaces, so dogs are welcome to join you for happy hour.

3. Colorado Springs, CO
Colorado Springs, Colorado prides itself on being extremely pet-friendly, and area hotels are no exception. Not only can your dog stay with you, but hotels like Cheyenne Mountain Station welcome them with open arms and puppy treat bags. Many outdoor terraces allow dogs, but some restaurants, such as pub doginclude indoor pet-friendly sections and menus so the dogs can dine with you.

4. Kansas City, Mo.
Kansas City, Missouri is also on the list of the most pet-friendly cities in the United States. This Midwestern town offers miles of outdoor space to enjoy with your dogs, including 6.8 miles Cart Track Trail and grassy areas outside the National World War I Museum. Need hiking gear before? When you’re ready to relax, check out Barka unique bar/restaurant and event space combined with a dog park, or by Lydia, an Italian restaurant with a dog-friendly terrace. 5. San Diego, California
Sunny San Diego, California is the next city on our list where pets are welcome to be as active as their people. One of the first and most famous dog beaches in the United States is found in San Diego’s Ocean Beach community, simply named Dog Beach. Additionally, the area has a few other dog-friendly beaches and two off-leash dog parks. These beaches even host dog sporting events, including the Unleashed Surf Dog competition and stand-up paddleboarding lessons.
Thanks to San Diego’s great year-round weather, many Restaurants, breweries, and shopping areas are outdoors and your pets are welcome! Is your puppy particularly spoiled? 6. Portland, OR
Portland, Oregon is our finalist pet-friendly city representing the northwest corner of the United States. The city has several large, fenced parks for off-leash dogs, including Gabriel Park, a 91-acre natural paradise. Additionally, the city and surrounding areas have thousands of miles of dog-friendly hiking trails, such as the 30 Mile Wild Woods Trail in the forest park.

7. St. Petersburg, Florida
St. Petersburg, Florida is the other beach town on our list of the best pet-friendly cities for 2022. Of course, that means there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches for your dog to enjoy. sun and sand! Photo by Soto is one of the best in the country, offering two fenced off-leash areas on the beach. After swimming, take a stroll down Beach Drive, where it’s common to leave dog water bowls outside businesses and find plenty of pet friendly terraces.

8. Denver, CO
Rounding out our list of the best pet-friendly cities is Denver, Colorado. Denver is another city where residents and tourists flock to enjoy the beauty of nature. Cherry Creek State Park, the first park in the Colorado park system, has a fenced area of 107 acres specifically for dogs. Of course, the hiking trails in and around the city, as in Washington Parkare also great to explore with your pup.
Microbreweries are hugely popular in Colorado, and true to form, many in Denver invite your dog to drink with you.
