Pet food maker NutriSource launches $20 million expansion at Delano

Pet food company based in Perham NutriSource expands its manufacturing footprint in Delano. On Wednesday, the company announced it has built a $20 million, 45,000 square foot wet food cannery inside Tuffy’s Treats Co.’s manufacturing plant in the city, located about 30 miles east. west of Minneapolis.

KLN Brands, which owns both NutriSource and Tuffy’s, first announced plans to build the $60 million Delano facility in 2019.

NutriSource executives hope the expansion of Tuffy’s manufacturing facility will allow the company to meet increased demand for wet pet food. As is the case in several other industries, global supply chain issues have hampered the production and shipping of canned pet food, according to the company.

The new facility has the capacity to produce up to 65 million cans of pet food per year.

“The U.S. pet food market grew 13.6% between 2020 and 2021, fueled primarily by an increase in pet ownership and the United States’ willingness to spend more on our pets. to improve their health and well-being,” said Mike Hamilton, Chief Marketing Officer, Tuffy’s Pet Foods. , in an email. “Wet food segment growth is consistent with overall market growth.”

NutriSource sells its products to independent pet retailers. Today, its NutriSource products are available nationwide at more than 6,000 independent pet retail partners. With the new cannery, NutriSource executives hope to offer retailers and contract manufacturing partners the opportunity to develop their own wet pet food business.

NutriSource plans to add 45 new full-time jobs as a result of the expansion. The company currently employs 140 people at the plant. The pet food maker received no tax credits or incentives from the city of Delano for the expansion.

“NutriSource and Tuffy’s Treat Company have proven to be amazing additions to our community,” Delano Mayor Dale Graunke said in a statement. “We are thrilled that they continue to view Delano as an exceptional place to live, work and do business.”

The Delano Tuffy plant is the company’s only wet food manufacturing facility.

Tuffy’s dry kibble production takes place at its factory in Perham.
