Pet adoption

Pet adoption day is set for Saturday

If you’re looking to add a new cat or dog to your family, this Saturday is a great opportunity to find them as Warren County Animal Control and new pet store Dragon Smart are teaming up to host an adoption event.

As the shelter remains over capacity with cats and dogs in need of homes, this Saturday’s event is one of many staff are attending in an effort to ease pressure on the facility. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., guests are invited to meet many of the eligible dogs and cats at Dragon Smart, located at 2516 Smithville Highway across from Gateway Tire.

“I worked at an animal shelter myself and love the idea of babies having another chance at life and finding good homes,” said pet store owner Alonna Geerts. “We wanted to partner with a shelter to host an adoption event to raise awareness of babies who need new homes.”

Geerts recently opened the business with her husband Dylan. They specialize in breeding bearded dragons, which are shipped all over the United States. Additionally, they carry many types of reptiles and small animals along with the tank supplies and accessories needed to care for them at Dragon Smart.

“I’m very passionate about animals and also have experience with different types,” Alonna said. “I’ve always wanted to open a pet store and provide proper care. I love working with exotics and all animals. My goal is to help animals thrive, not just survive.

Pets adopted at the event will be released into their new homes after being spayed or neutered, and adoption fees will be reduced for active duty military members as well as veterans.

Dragon Smart is regularly open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
