There is good news for animal lovers as Navi Mumbai has opened its first dog park in Vashi. The dedicated dog park will have play areas and other facilities and will be available free of charge. The dedicated dog park was developed by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).

Divya Vaibhaw Gaikwad, a former business owner from Vashi, was instrumental in setting up the dog park in Vashi and felt the need for a dedicated space where residents could walk their dogs. “Navi Mumbai is a 21st century city and is equipped with all the facilities a city needs. However, animal lovers have always complained about the lack of a dedicated place for dogs,” Gaikwad said.

About 900 square meters, the park has a separate enclosure in the Veer Savarkar Garden near Sagar Vihar in Vashi Sector 8. Pet lovers have welcomed the move and are eager to walk their dogs.

Developed at a cost of Rs 26 lakh, there are toys like large and small size of Doggie Crawl, Balance Beam, Hill Climb small and large, Bridge Climb, Dog walk ramp, Teeter Totter and Jump Hurdles for dogs in the park.

During the period, in a city like Navi Mumbai, there is an increasing tendency to keep a pet, especially dogs, at home. “Love for the animal is part of society and many people who stay home alone prefer to keep a dog. The facilities will definitely help dog lovers,” a senior city official said.

While the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has developed pet corners in a few city parks, this is the first dedicated dog park in the city. “It is well designed and will serve as a dedicated space for dogs, pet owners and animal lovers to spend some quality time,” Gaikwad said.

Aditi Pawar, a pet owner, says she doesn’t need to take her dog to another garden because many children and elderly people are afraid of dogs. “The dog garden solves a lot of problems,” she says.
