An iconic pet shop just off Glasgow’s Saltmarket is up for sale.
Thomas Hays Pet Shop has been offering a range of pets and supplies including tropical fish, birds, kittens, hamsters, reptiles, pet food, cages, tanks and hutches since 1940. Its current owners took over the business in the 1960s but are now exiting.
The place may bring back memories to older Glasgow residents who visited there on a Saturday afternoon, while on a family outing in town.
The Osbourne Street premises were put on the market on a lease basis, priced at £25,000 + Stock at Valuation (SAV). In 2020 the business had an annual turnover of £79,309 with current rent of £14,640 per annum.

The corner site on the ground floor includes showcases, large wall displays, a service counter, an electronic cash register and payment facilities.
A large space on the side of the front door is available to display tanks with a well-designed tropical fish area as well as a small kitchen.
Hilton Smythe of Business Adviser said: “Hilton Smythe is delighted to welcome to the market on a lease basis an opportunity to purchase this well-established and well-managed pet store and aquatic center.
“The business has been in business since the 1940s and has been under the meticulous ownership of our client since the early 1960s and has built an enviable reputation for the products and services it has to offer and has only been put on the market only now to sell.
“It is the desire of our clients to take a well-deserved retirement, after many successful years of trading.”
