KOTA KINABALU: Firefighters have been called to rescue pets after a fire at a pet store in Tawau district on the east coast of Sabah.
Firefighters helped rescue 10 cats and a dog that were being kept at the Mile 3 shop in Jalan Apas on Sunday September 25.
Tawau Fire Station Chief Julius John Stephen Jr said a team was dispatched to the area after receiving a distress call from store staff at 4.44pm.
It turned out, he said, that the store’s emergency exit sign had somehow caught fire, but only 10% of it had been burned.
“But as a precautionary measure, we took the animals to a safer place outside the store while we put out the fire and made sure that there was no longer any risk for the store,” said he said, contacted Monday, September 26.

In a separate incident, a 44-year-old man was blessed with only minor injuries after his car crashed into a ditch just opposite a police station in Ranau district shortly after midnight on Monday .
Ranau Fire Chief Ridwan Mohd Taib said the man somehow lost control of the car and it landed upside down in the drain.
