Fire Department update on Ilkeston pet shop blaze

Firefighters worked late in the evening after a fire ravaged a pet store in Ilkeston.

The teams were called in for the ‘big fire’ at 1st 4 Animals on Bath Street just before 5pm on Saturday 9th October.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Chiefs issued an update before midnight.

In a tweet, the fire department said: “With the incident underway, the swift actions of the initial crews undoubtedly saved property here!”

Firefighters have now left the scene.

Teams from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire were called to the scene and thick black smoke could be seen rising into the sky.

Incident commander Steve Ratcliffe said upon arrival smoke billowed from the roof and flames from the windows.

Smoke rises from the fire on Saturday, October 9.

He said there were “no pets inside during the blaze” and the business owner and his family had attempted to put out the blaze.

The fire chief said: “The owner of the business and his family were in the building at the time of the fire, they attempted to fight the blaze without success.

“They did well.”
