The Brenham Pet Adoption Center is nearly full.
The town of Brenham said the shelter was at 85% capacity on Wednesday. Shelter officials say that once it hits 75%, pets begin to exhibit physical and mental health issues due to stress.
The shelter now limits the admission of stray animals and dogs to emergencies only.
Animal services manager Allison Harper says help from the community is needed during this time when adoptions are low nationwide.
Anyone looking to adopt a pet from the shelter can go to the city’s Petfinder page at www.petfinder.com. For those who have pets they can no longer keep, they are encouraged to use the self-rehousing page, https://home-home.org.
The center reminds pet owners to make sure their pets are carrying ID if they need to go outside. It says most strays are found within 100 feet of their home, but only 10% are recovered once brought to the shelter.
People bringing their pets to the shelter are also asked to be patient as general operations have been changed due to full capacity.
